The SME segment has certain apprehensions and myths when it comes to the adoption of digital solutions. A recently held virtual event of Tata Tele Business Services was aimed at demystifying new technologies for business transformation from the SME perspective.

The SME segment plays a key role in the overall economic development and growth of the country. As the entire world moves ahead towards digitalization, it is equally important for the SMEs to do so. However, this is a challenging process due to certain inherent misconceptions about digital adoption amongst the SME companies. To address their apprehensions and to simplify their technology adoption, Tata Tele Business Services had organized a virtual event that was curated by Pro MFG Media. The tone setting and moderation of the event was done by Manish Kulkarni, Director, Pro MFG Media.

The event was set rolling by a quick but insightful welcome note by Rudra Misra, Regional Marketing Head – West, Tata Tele Business Services. He said: “Every company today realises the fact there is no respite without digital adoption; it is the new way of doing business. So SMEs will have to make room for digital transformation in their overall business strategy. This would involve finding the right purpose and the right plan to become digital savvy. Thus, it is important to understand how SMEs can leverage digital solutions to their advantage.”

This was followed by an interesting ‘Fireside Chat’ on the subject of ‘Technology: Solving tomorrow’s challenges Today’ with Pankaj Mittal, Founder of DigiZen Consulting. Mr. Mittal highlighted the ‘what and why’ of the right technologies required for transforming SME businesses. He also touched upon other relevant issues like the benefits of adopting Cloud, the cyber readiness of SME organizations in terms of understanding ‘what to secure & how to secure’ and the selection of right collaboration technologies.

“Today, no organization – small, mid or large – can live without the cloud. The adoption of cloud is faster now because the traditional ways of deploying your applications or software or platforms - which enabled you to do business with your ecosystem and with your partners as well as your vendors - has been disrupted. Cloud allows you to start your business transformation journey in a matter of clicks. For example, there are multiple CRM applications that are primarily used for interacting with clients, for creating client related databases, for sales leads, for keeping account data and so on. For all of this, you do not need high quality servers or high speed connectivity. All of this is, in fact, extremely transitional,” Mr. Mittal said.

Another engaging session of the event was the conversation with two SME business owners, Kishore Khaitan, Managing Director, Basant Fibertek & Sharad Singh, Co-founder & CEO, Valuefy. “The pandemic has surely accelerated adoption of collaboratively tools. As a product company, we transformed ourselves using the collaborative tools on two fronts. First was about what we had to do internally as a product company in order to be ready for our customers. Secondly, it was about what we added in our products for our customers and end users to help grow their business, said Sharad Singh, Co-founder & CEO, Valuefy.

“It is always better to think of your business processes and define your corporate strategies, business KRAs and organization structure before you enter onto the digitalization path. If you are trying to digitalize something which worked in the past but is not relevant in the future then you would be actually going on the wrong foot and it can cost the company a great deal,” said Kishore Khaitan, Managing Director, Basant Fibertek. Both of them shared their business experiences with regards to several key aspects of digital adoption like:

● Adopting technology to improve business productivity,
● Using collaborative technologies, especially during the disruption caused due to Covid-19,
● The digitisation strategies for SMEs – the structure, defining KRAs and the role of the tech partner for finding the right solutions,
● How the work-flow technology tools are assisting in business transformation, and
● How SMEs can gear themselves up and how a culture can be built to address cyber security threats.

The event concluded with an informative presentation by Yogesh Dubey, Solution Architect with Tata Tele Business Services. Mr. Dubey highlighted some of the simple guidelines for technology adoption by SMEs. He also drew attention to the key digital trends like BCP, cloud and security that can prove to be agility enablers for SMEs.
