December 2025 : The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay and global digital infrastructure provider Vertiv have formalized a landmark strategic collaboration aimed at tackling the intensive thermal demands of next-generation AI-driven computing workloads in data centers. The partnership is set to play a pivotal role in advancing India’s digital and technological self-reliance.
The formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by Prof. Shireesh Kedare, Director of IIT Bombay, and Mr. Subhasis Majumdar, Managing Director at Vertiv India. They highlighted a unified effort toward driving indigenous innovation and supporting the Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat mission. The collaboration is further elevated through the guidance of Dr. AS Prasad, whose engineering leadership at Vertiv adds significant depth to the initiative.
The core of the partnership centers on leveraging IIT Bombay's patented Rotating Contacting Disk (RCD) system, developed by Prof. M. V. Rane, Department of Mechanical Engineering. This innovative technology is designed to deliver scalable, sustainable cooling engineered for high-density AI workloads.
The RCD system offers substantial technical advantages over conventional solutions: It has substantially lower air-side pressure drops than conventional pad-type precoolers, reducing fan power and noise while improving Water Utilization Efficiency. Crucially, it enables the use of recycled water or even seawater, significantly boosting sustainability. The system is already licensed for Wastewater Vapourization and CO2 Scrubbing, having demonstrated up to 4x energy savings in fan power as an energy-efficient cooling tower solution.
The collaboration is designed to create long-term impact by giving students and researchers hands-on exposure to real engineering challenges, industry mentorship, and deeper engagement with emerging digital infrastructure technologies, aligning directly with India's long-term digital ambitions.
