January 2026 : In a move that cements the deepening high-tech alliance between India and Germany, semiconductor giant Infineon Technologies and the National Institute of Electronics & Information Technology (NIELIT) have signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
The agreement was witnessed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Ahmedabad, during the Chancellor’s first official visit to India since assuming office last year. The partnership marks a critical step toward the "Viksit Bharat 2047" vision by building a future-ready workforce for the global semiconductor industry.
Under this comprehensive framework, Infineon will collaborate with NIELIT - an autonomous body under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) - to bridge the skill gap in semiconductor assembly, testing, and packaging. The initiative includes:Curriculum Enrichment - Aligning academic programs with industry standards. "Train the Trainer" Initiatives - Upskilling educators to deliver world-class technical training. Equipment Donation - Providing hands-on practical training tools to NIELIT’s nationwide centers.
"India is one of the world's most dynamic economies, and its ambition to build a vibrant semiconductor ecosystem aligns perfectly with Infineon's expertise in power systems and IoT," said Jochen Hanebeck, CEO of Infineon. "Our partnership with NIELIT reflects our deep commitment to India - not just as a market, but as a strategic innovation and R&D hub."
Prof. M.M. Tripathi, Director General of NIELIT, emphasized the impact on India’s self-reliance: "This partnership with Infineon represents a significant milestone for India's semiconductor ecosystem development. By combining NIELIT's nationwide training infrastructure with Infineon's global expertise in semiconductor manufacturing, we will create world-class skilling programmes that prepare our youth for careers in this critical sector."
The visit also highlighted Infineon's growing footprint in India, including the successful expansion of its Global Capability Centre (GCC) in GIFT City, which has already grown to over 150 employees. With a new high-tech campus set for completion in Bengaluru later this year, the India-Germany partnership is effectively powering the next generation of e-mobility, IoT, and green energy solutions.
