July 2026 : FORVIA HELLA has recently announced the launch of its first fully integrated 12-volt lithium-ion battery pack. Designed to meet the surging demand for dependable, intelligent low-voltage power supplies in electric and hybrid vehicles, this innovative system is a massive step away from heavy, conventional lead-acid architectures.
The unit cleverly combines premium lithium-ion cells with a battery management system (BMS) into a single, compact subsystem. By condensing these interfaces, the design cuts vehicle installation space, slashes system complexity, and sheds around 20% of the weight of traditional car batteries. Crucially, the pack deploys multidimensional algorithms to track current, voltage, and temperature - ensuring highly precise readouts of the battery's state of charge (SoC) and overall state of health (SoH) over its lifetime.
Even in high-voltage EVs, a stable 12-volt on-board network is vital. It powers baseline safety and comfort loads, like driver assistance and infotainment systems. More importantly, it serves as an emergency backup. Working in tandem with a high-voltage DC-DC converter, the pack ensures a redundant power supply up to ASIL D standards. If the main high-voltage network fails, this 12-volt pack seamlessly takes over, keeping steering and braking fully functional.
The market has already responded. FORVIA HELLA has secured series orders from international automakers valued in the low to mid three-digit million euro range, with production slated to kick off in China in summer 2027.
Discussing the launch, Sebastian Keils, Head of Global Product Center Energy Management, stated: “Launching our 12-volt battery pack not only expands our product portfolio for electromobility. Above all, it also reflects our clear strategic direction. We do not only deliver high-performance key components, we are also a provider of integrated system solutions in energy management, building on our decades of experience in battery electronics.”
Highlighting the long-term collaboration with carmakers, Keils added: “Our first 12-volt lithium-ion battery pack underlines our ambition to stand by automotive manufacturers as a close partner on their path toward electromobility, with products that create real added value through intelligent energy management and close coordination between high-voltage and low-voltage systems. In this way, we help our customers build more efficient, safer and more reliable energy architectures for their vehicles.”
He concluded by stressing their unified approach: “As we have both key products in our portfolio and can supply them to our customers from a single source, we also support our customers with comprehensive system understanding. This enables manufacturers to implement robust architectures and to ensure a stable energy supply for safety-critical functions through a complete solution at the overall system level.”
