August 2025 : Jindal Steel and Power (JSP) has commissioned Primetals Technologies to supply and implement a comprehensive Level 1 and 2 automation system upgrade at its 5-meter plate mill in Angul, Odisha. The project, which aims to improve system availability and ensure a stable supply of spare parts, is scheduled for startup in the first quarter of 2026.

This upgrade is a landmark event for the Indian steel industry, as it marks the first installation of the advanced SIMATIC S7-1500 control system and the latest WinCC software at a plate mill of this scale in the country. The project also includes the full virtualization of all servers to ensure more efficient lifecycle management of the automation infrastructure.

JSP's plate mill has an annual capacity of 1.2 million tons. By retaining key automation functions, the upgrade will allow for a shorter ramp-up period, as operators and maintenance personnel will already be familiar with the system. This will help address the issue of unwanted downtime caused by the mill's outdated automation system, improve production stability, and enable the seamless integration of future software packages.
