Sept 2026 : Building on a decade-long relationship, Praj Industries and US-based Gevo, Inc. have signed a Development & Commercialization Agreement to take Bio-Isobutanol (Bio-IBA) towards commercial demonstration in India. The partnership marks the world’s first application of Bio-IBA for diesel blending, opening a crucial new pathway to integrate renewable carbon into India's heavy-fuel market.
The agreement gives Praj exclusive rights to scale and commercialize Gevo’s Bio-IBA technology nationwide. By marrying Gevo’s bio-based technology with Praj’s expertise in sugar- and starch-based feedstocks, engineering, and project execution, the duo aims to curb the carbon intensity of diesel across transportation, agriculture, mining, construction, and heavy industry.
According to the Petroleum Planning & Analysis Cell (PPAC), India consumed roughly 94.7 million tonnes (11,400 crore litres) of high-speed diesel in FY2025-26 - highlighting the vast scale of the opportunity.
To move Bio-IBA from lab to road, application trials are already in advanced stages. In parallel, Praj is setting up India's first commercial Bio-IBA demonstration plant for a leading state-owned Oil Marketing Company (OMC). The facility will validate production logistics, supply-chain readiness, and commercial viability.
Highlighting the alliance, Paul Bloom, Chief Executive Officer of Gevo, noted: "This agreement marks an important milestone in our relationship with Praj and in the advancement of Bio-IBA in India. Gevo brings proven renewable isobutanol technology and commercialization experience, while Praj contributes deep expertise in engineering, deployment and market development. Together, we are creating a framework to unlock new opportunities for Bio-IBA, particularly in diesel applications, while supporting broader decarbonization objectives."
