November 2025 : TruAlt Bioenergy, India's largest ethanol producer, and Sumitomo Corporation, a leading Japanese integrated trading and investment company, have announced a strategic partnership aimed at accelerating India's clean energy transition and reinforcing its path toward energy independence.
The collaboration centers on Compressed Biogas (CBG) production, with Sumitomo Corporation acquiring a strategic stake in TruAlt’s subsidiary, now renamed TruAlt Sumi Gas Private Limited (TSGPL). The newly formed entity plans to develop 16 CBG plants across India, with operations commencing sequentially from 2026.
These facilities are projected to produce approximately 320 tons of CBG per day, which is equivalent to meeting the daily gas requirements of over 800,000 households in India. The raw materials will be sourced from India’s agricultural and industrial residues, including sugarcane and ethanol residue from TruAlt and its group companies, enabling a “Farm-to-Fuel-to-Flight circular bioeconomy.” The CBG will be sold primarily as automobile fuel to major city gas distributors.
Beyond CBG, the partnership will also explore expanding bioethanol production and, critically, producing Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) derived from bioethanol.
In a statement, TruAlt Bioenergy noted that the partnership “symbolizes shared innovation, sustainability, and long-term value creation for a cleaner, greener planet.”
Sumitomo Corporation, which aims to leverage its domestic network and expertise in CBG sales, stated the investment will “accelerate the growth of its Energy Solutions Business,” positioning the company to capitalize on the Indian government's mandate to gradually increase CBG blending in automobile and city gas, targeting a 5% mix by 2028. The collaboration will also work toward generating carbon credits under the Japan-India Bilateral Credit Mechanism (JCM).
“Together, we’re powering a cleaner tomorrow from India’s heartland to global skies,” the companies declared, uniting TruAlt’s bioenergy leadership with Sumitomo’s global industrial expertise to drive a significant shift in India’s energy landscape.
