“We are seeing a steady growth in order from various customers in the railway and metro segments and this expansion will allow us to keep up with the customer demand. Many of these product lines are also part of the ‘Make in India’ initiative and meeting the charter of localized, customized products” - Ajay Mani, MD, Wabtec’s Transit Business in India

March 2023: Wabtec Corporation has recently announced the expansion of its existing transit business facility in Hosur. The expansion is intended to meet the growing demand for the products and solutions such as Brake Systems, Doors and Couplers for Vande Bharat express, Brake Systems for new generation of E-Locomotives, High Reach Pantographs, Passenger Information System, and Relays that Wabtec has to offer for Indian Railways.

“We are seeing a steady growth in order from various customers in the railway and metro segments and this expansion will allow us to keep up with the customer demand,” said Ajay Mani, Managing Director of Wabtec’s Transit business in India. “Many of these product lines are also part of the ‘Make in India’ initiative and meet the charter of localized, customized products,” he added.

The investment expands the Hosur facility by 80,000 sq. Ft. and enables more sustainable operations. The new facilities and layouts were an outcome of 3P workshops, which optimized material movements, created product-centric focus work areas, and enhanced storage space for raw materials and finished goods. The plant is installed with 400 KW of solar power and an additional 400KW is planned later this year. The rainwater harvesting facility has also been upgraded to a water positive site wherein 23K Cu.m is drawn and 28K Cu.m is recharged every year. New office space has an additional seating capacity of 150 & buildings at Wabtec’s Hosur facility have gold certification from the United States Green Building Council (USGBC). LEED certified buildings adhere to energy, water, waste, transportation, materials, health and indoor environmental quality, and reduce the carbon footprint.

A significant factory enhancement is around relays from Wabtec’s transit electrical solutions portfolio. These relays will be assembled and manufactured from the Hosur location for global requirements. “Wabtec is known for superior quality of relays. With new trains being launched every year, we see an addressable market for it,” said Sunil Yesudas, Executive Director – Engineering, Wabtec Transit. “The increase in operational footprint, LEED certification for our facility in Hosur are all in line with our growth ambitions and sustainability goals,” he added.

The Hosur facility has been in operation since 1980. It serves as a main manufacturing facility for Wabtec Transit products in India. The facility has been manufacturing brake systems, couplers, HVAC, pantographs and electronic products with integrated painting, welding, anodizing, and a machine shop.
