December 2025 : In a significant push towards a sustainable and self-reliant transportation future, a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) has been officially signed to create India’s first advanced Hydrogen Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) Electric Bus. This landmark collaboration brings together four key players: the Pune Hydrogen Valley Foundation (PHVF), the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), VE Commercial Vehicles Ltd. (VECV), and Honda (Japan & India).
The project is a flagship initiative of the Pune Hydrogen Valley Innovation Cluster (P-HVIC), one of the four prestigious Hydrogen Valleys approved under the National Green Hydrogen Mission by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India. The P-HVIC is designed as a real-life demonstration project to showcase indigenous technologies across the entire value chain, from green hydrogen production and storage to dispensing and its use in heavy-duty mobility solutions.
This strategic agreement is being hailed as a major step toward accelerating zero-emission heavy-duty transportation. By pooling their expertise, industry leaders (VECV, Honda) and premier research institutions (ARAI, PHVF) are committed to building a robust ecosystem powered by green hydrogen fuel cell technology. The outcome will be a cleaner, highly efficient alternative to traditional fossil-fuel vehicles.
The core objective of the P-HVIC is to showcase indigenous technologies for heavy-duty applications, including hydrogen fuel cell-based electric mobility and hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine (ICE)- based powertrains. This endeavor aligns perfectly with the national goal of achieving sustainable mobility and enhancing energy security, positioning India at the forefront of the global green hydrogen economy.
