India’s Mobility Transformation: A Multi-Pathway Journey Towards a Developed Nation
“For India to become a developed nation, mobility has to play a great role.” - Dr. Tarun Aggarwal

October 2025 : India’s journey towards becoming a developed nation will be shaped significantly by how it reimagines mobility both in scale and in sustainability. This was the central message delivered by Dr. Tarun Aggarwal, Senior Executive Officer, Maruti Suzuki India Limited, during his valedictory address at iTECINDIA 2025 – Powering the Future of Mobility, jointly organized by SAEINDIA, IEEE, and the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) in Pune.
“For India to become a developed nation, mobility has to play a great role,” Aggarwal asserted. With personal car penetration currently at around 30 per 1,000 people, India lags far behind advanced economies, where the figure typically exceeds 100. As the aspirations of over a billion people grow, the country will inevitably witness a surge in demand for personal mobility. However, Aggarwal cautioned that the current trajectory may not be sustainable , and new approaches will be required to meet mobility needs responsibly.
Maruti Suzuki, he noted, is embracing a multi-pathway strategy to enable this transition. While multiple technologies will coexist, electrification stands out as a critical pathway toward sustainable mobility. Aggarwal emphasized the importance of collaboration between industry, academia, and students - the future workforce in shaping solutions that can propel the nation forward. Events like iTECINDIA, he said, create vital platforms for dialogue, learning, and joint action.
Backing words with investment, Aggarwal revealed that Maruti Suzuki is nearly doubling its manufacturing capacity over the next five to six years , establishing new plants to meet rising mobility demand. “The time for India is here. All the stars are aligned for us to become a developed nation,” he said, highlighting the automotive sector’s central role in realizing this ambition.
Concluding on a visionary note, he urged collective effort from all stakeholders to achieve the Prime Minister’s vision of a developed India. “I hope to see this transformation in my lifetime,” he said underscoring both urgency and optimism in India’s mobility transformation journey.
