November 2025 : Multi-national engineering major John Cockerill is making a significant strategic move by relocating the global headquarters of its metals business to Mumbai. This decision solidifies Mumbai's rapidly growing reputation as a global industrial powerhouse.
The announcement follows discussions between the company’s global CEO, François Michel, and other senior executives Vivek Bhide and François David Martino, with Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday.
Chief Minister Fadnavis highlighted the depth of the meeting and future collaborations in a post on X, stating: “Our discussions focused on bringing cutting-edge steel and defence technologies to Maharashtra, in collaboration with partners like L&T and EPHL, Pune.” He added that the relocation is a major affirmation for the state's economic standing: “A key highlight is that John Cockerill will move its global headquarters for the Metals business to Mumbai, reaffirming Maharashtra’s rise as a global industrial hub.”
This relocation is directly tied to a major corporate restructuring. The shift follows the proposed acquisition of the entire equity stake of the newly incorporated John Cockerill Metals International SA by the listed Indian entity from its Belgian parent company.
In a recent stock exchange filing, the company clarified the strategic intent behind this move: “The purpose of acquiring the shares is to consolidate and enhance the strategic operations of the Metals Business of John Cockerill Group.”
The move signals a strong commitment to the Indian market and is set to position the newly headquartered metals business for enhanced operational efficiency and strategic consolidation, leveraging Mumbai's robust commercial and industrial ecosystem.
