"Peptides present some of the most intricate formulation challenges in pharmaceutical development, owing to their inherent instability and sensitivity to processing conditions. Spray drying addresses these distinct challenges by allowing tight control over key components like temperature and solvent environment. With the addition of the spray drying suite at Turbhe, we can help our partners bring stable, high-quality peptide formulations to patients in need worldwide." - Dr. Jordi Bacardit, Global Technical Lead on Peptides and Member of the Science Collective at PPS.

August 2026 : Piramal Pharma Solutions (PPS) has unveiled a spray drying suite at its dedicated peptide development and manufacturing site in Turbhe, India. The strategic expansion enhances the CDMO’s ability to tackle complex formulation hurdles for peptides and high-potency active pharmaceutical ingredients (HPAPIs), directly addressing the industry’s growing demand for stable biomolecules.

Spray drying converts liquid formulations into dry powders in a single step, giving drug developers precise control over particle size while boosting bioavailability. This technique is particularly crucial for peptides, which are prone to thermal degradation and require precise processing conditions to maintain molecular integrity.

Operating as a closed-loop system, the new suite features Band 5 containment capabilities designed for safe handling of organic solvents and highly potent compounds. It runs on its own inert gas supply and dedicated HVAC systems, supported by airlocked entryways, operator isolation zones, and an ISO Class 8 cleanroom environment. Built specifically for high-potency, small-volume batches, the suite handles feed rates up to 1 liter per hour and processes highly concentrated solutions containing up to 30% water. Beyond peptides and biomolecules, the setup can also be used for low-volume small-molecule formulations under optimal conditions.
